Shiga Prefecture (滋賀県 Shiga-ken) is located in Japan's Kansai region, situated to the east of Kyoto on the main island of Honshu. This prefecture surrounds Lake Biwa, the largest freshwater lake in Japan. Ōtsu serves as the capital city, which features the principal port on Lake Biwa and is home to significant temples like Enryaku-ji, recognized as part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site known as the "Historic Monuments of Ancient Kyoto" that includes Kyoto, Uji, and Otsu. The picturesque shores of Lake Biwa are dotted with charming cities such as Hikone and Nagahama, which offer wonderful vacation spots, historical landmarks like the 17th-century Hikone Castle, beautiful beaches including the lovely Ōmi-Maiko Beach, and relaxing hot springs (onsen). The rural city of Koka is renowned as the birthplace of the ninja, showcasing attractions connected to this heritage, like Ninja Village and Ninja House. Additionally, Koka houses the Miho Museum, celebrated for its architectural design and scenic integration with the surrounding landscape.
