A live, high-definition webcam provides views of the Statue of Liberty as seen from across New York Harbor in Brooklyn, capturing its grandeur and the surrounding scenery. The statue stands as one of the United States’ most recognizable landmarks, located on Liberty Island in New York City. Designed by Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi, it was officially unveiled on October 28, 1886, as a gift from the French people to commemorate the alliance between France and the United States during the American Revolution. The monument reaches a total height of 305 feet, with the pedestal contributing an additional 154 feet. The statue’s right arm lifts a brilliant torch symbolizing enlightenment, while the left arm holds a tablet bearing the date of the Declaration of Independence in Roman numerals: JULY IV, MDCCLXXVI (July 4, 1776). It remains one of the most-visited landmarks in the country, drawing millions of visitors each year to admire its colossal copper form, with its location indicated on the map further down.
Officially called Liberty Enlightening the World, the statue was designated a National Monument in 1924, and Ellis Island followed in 1965. Liberty Island and Ellis Island were later added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1966. In 1984, UNESCO inscribed the Statue of Liberty on its World Heritage List.
