You are observing the stunning west coast sea nettles at the Aquarium of the Pacific in Long Beach. These creatures, a type of jellyfish, are invertebrates primarily composed of water. Jellies lack a heart, brain, and skeletal structure. They utilize jet propulsion for swimming; by expanding their bell-shaped body and then rapidly contracting it, they expel water, propelling themselves in the opposite direction. The aquarium has been successfully breeding this species for several years and frequently provides these jellies to other aquariums. The process of nurturing them from polyps to ephyrae, their adult form, takes approximately three months.
