The Coral City Camera is an innovative underwater broadcasting device that streams live footage from an urban reef situated in Miami, Florida. Positioned near the shore at the eastern end of PortMiami, it operates in approximately 10 feet (3 meters) of water. This camera was installed by Coral Morphologic as part of a collaborative art-science initiative developed in partnership with Bridge Initiative and Bas Fisher Invitational, and was initially made possible through funding from a Knight Arts Challenge grant from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, along with an Art Works grant from the National Endowment for the Arts. The Coral City Camera offers a captivating fish-eye perspective into the vibrant urban marine ecosystem that has formed along Miami’s artificial shorelines. This project was conceived with the belief that the remarkable diversity of life just beneath the surface in Miami should inspire community pride and encourage public efforts to safeguard local marine habitats. The boulder-strewn shoreline at PortMiami showcases how human engineering can provide critical shelter and ecological space for endangered species, often in surprising urban environments, while also serving as easily accessible locations for scientific research.
