The Retired Pack was established in 2002 to provide a comfortable environment for the aging members of the 1993 litter, which includes MacKenzie, Lakota, and Lucas. Now, it is time to welcome the next generation into retirement. Malik and Shadow, who belong to the arctic subspecies of the gray wolf, were born on May 8, 2000. Malik held the lowest rank among males in the Exhibit Pack and was retired in September 2009 due to escalating aggression from Grizzer, the second-ranking male, which posed a risk to Malik's safety. Shadow was retired in June 2010, as he began to exhibit signs of aging that prompted scrutiny from the younger wolves. The camera captures the den area, which is the focal point of the retirement enclosure. You might catch a glimpse of Malik or Shadow running alongside the fence, reacting to the happenings of the Exhibit Pack. Despite their retirement, the two packs maintain communication through howling and have a small section of the fence where they can observe one another without direct interaction.
